The Cheapest Job That Prevents the Most Expensive One
Blocked gutters are how water gets into a wall. The run fills with leaf mulch and moss washdown, the water backs up over the front edge or behind the fascia, and from there it runs down the brickwork every time it rains. It shows up months later as damp on an internal wall, and by that point the fix is not a £35 job any more.
I clear front and back, flush the downpipes, and then show you photographs of what was in there and what it looks like now. If your gutters did not actually need doing, you will see that in the photographs too, and there is no pressure from me either way. That is the part customers tend to comment on.

What a Blocked Gutter Leads To
Water always finds the cheapest way in, and a blocked gutter is the cheapest way in there is.
Damp on internal walls
Overflow soaks the same patch of brickwork every time it rains until it shows through inside as a tide mark, blown plaster or mould in a corner. Drying and replastering costs many times what clearance does.
Rotten fascia and soffit
Timber sitting behind a leaking gutter never dries out. Once it has gone soft the brackets have nothing to hold on to and the whole run has to be replaced rather than cleaned.
Sagging and broken runs
Waterlogged debris is surprisingly heavy, heavy enough to pull brackets out of the fascia, drop a joint out of level and split a plastic gutter at the seam.
Frost damage over winter
Standing water in a blocked run freezes, expands and splits joints. That is why late autumn is the right time to clear, before the first hard frost rather than after it.

Gutters on the Wirral
Local conditions decide how often this actually needs doing, and they vary a lot between a sheltered estate and an exposed coastal road.
How often it needs doing
Once a year suits most houses, best done in late autumn once the leaves are down and before the first frost. That single visit catches the whole leaf fall and leaves the runs empty through the wettest months.
Under mature trees, or on a roof that sheds moss, twice a year is more realistic, once after the leaves and once in late spring after the blossom and seed.
What actually blocks a gutter
Leaf mulch is the obvious one, but on the Wirral the bigger culprit is often moss washing down off the roof tiles. It forms a dense mat that holds water like a sponge and does not flush away in heavy rain.
Add nesting material, roof grit from ageing tiles, wind-blown sand near the coast and the occasional tennis ball, and you have a run that has stopped being a gutter and started being a planter.
Downpipes, hoppers and the bits people forget
Clearing the gutter but not the downpipe is the most common half-job in this trade. If the pipe is blocked at the shoe or at a bend, the run still backs up within a week of the next rain.
That is why every job includes flushing water through after clearance. If it does not flow, it is not finished.
